The coach has the balls. The kids queue up, the first one ready at the disc.
How to run it
Kids catch a short pass on the move, tuck the ball away and run into the "end zone" for a touchdown. The drill trains catching with the hands and carrying the ball securely.
Set-up
The coach stands in the middle with three balls. The kids queue to the left of the coach. About 15 m away is a gate of two cones – the end zone – with a "ball box" behind it.
Instructions
- 1The coach has the balls. The kids queue up, the first one ready at the disc.
- 2Number 2 runs forward and inside. The coach tosses a short, soft pass in front of him – catch with the hands, thumbs together like a diamond.
- 3Tuck the ball in (high and tight) and run through the gate. The next in line moves up.
- 4The ball goes into the ball box – touchdown! Number 3 runs out towards the sideline and catches his pass.
- 5Number 3 runs for the end zone. Number 2 jogs back to the queue outside the lane, number 4 moves up.
- 6Number 3 puts his ball in the box. Number 4 runs forward and inside and makes the catch.
- 7Number 4 runs through the gate. Number 3 jogs back and number 2 is first in the queue again.
- 8Everyone has scored a touchdown. Collect the balls and play another round – change the direction of the run.
Coaching points
- Catch with the hands reaching out for the ball, not against the chest. Watch the ball all the way into the hands.
- Say "catch – tuck – run" so the kids have a simple order to follow.
- Throw soft and short at first. Make the passes longer only when most kids catch them securely.
- Celebrate every touchdown – having fun is the goal.
Variations
Easier
The kids stand still to catch and run only after the catch. Use a smaller, soft ball.
Harder
Add a defender (no contact) who tries to pull the flag before the ball carrier reaches the gate.
