Three pairs at a gate each, one player on each side. The player with the ball holds it at the chest.
How to run it
Pairs pass to each other through small gates of cones, then move on to a new gate. Children practise the chest pass, catching with two hands and looking up before they pass.
Set-up
Half a court with four gates (two cones about 1.2 m apart). Players in pairs, one ball per pair, 2 m from either side of a gate. Always one gate more than there are pairs.
Instructions
- 1Three pairs at a gate each, one player on each side. The player with the ball holds it at the chest.
- 2Chest pass through the gate: step in, thumbs point down after the pass. The partner catches with two hands.
- 3Pass back through the gate. Show your hands as a target before the ball comes.
- 4Change gates! The ball carrier dribbles to a free gate, the partner runs to its other side.
- 5Chest pass through the new gate – check that it's free first.
- 6Back through the gate. Count how many passes the pair makes without a drop.
- 7Change gates again: the player with the ball dribbles, the partner runs round.
- 8Now an overhead pass: ball behind the head, elbows forward, release high so it drops into the partner's hands.
- 9Overhead pass back. Swap roles in the pair so both get to dribble between gates.
Coaching points
- Stand with one foot slightly ahead and step towards your partner as you pass – the power comes from the legs.
- The receiver shows hands in front of the chest, fingers up, and steps to meet the ball.
- Call your partner's name before you pass.
- Look up when you dribble to the next gate so you don't bump into other pairs.
Variations
Easier
Shorter distance (1.5 m) and wider gates. Chest passes only.
Harder
Longer distance, narrower gates, or a target: as many gates as possible in one minute. Add a bounce pass through one of the gates.
