Two-Line Lay-Ups

Two lines: the shooting line on the right (first two with a ball), the rebounding line on the left.

How to run it

The classic lay-up drill with a shooting line and a rebounding line. Players practise dribbling to the basket, taking two steps and laying the ball off the backboard – and grabbing the rebound and feeding the next shooter.

Set-up

One basket. The shooting line stands on the right wing just inside half court, the rebounding line on the left. The first two in the shooting line have a ball each. A disc marks where each line starts.

Instructions

  1. 1Two lines: the shooting line on the right (first two with a ball), the rebounding line on the left.
  2. 2No. 1 dribbles towards the basket with the right hand. No. 4, first in the rebounding line, moves in towards the lane.
  3. 3No. 1 takes two steps – right, left – and jumps off the left foot. No. 4 gets ready for the rebound.
  4. 4Right-handed lay-up off the backboard. The next player in each line steps up.
  5. 5No. 4 takes the ball out of the net. No. 1 runs towards the rebounding line. No. 2 dribbles in.
  6. 6No. 4 passes out to no. 3, the first player in the shooting line without a ball. No. 2 arrives at the basket, no. 5 moves in to rebound.
  7. 7No. 2 lays it up. No. 3 steps up with the ball, no. 4 joins the back of the shooting line.
  8. 8No. 5 rebounds. No. 3 dribbles in, no. 2 runs over to the rebounding line.
  9. 9No. 5 passes out to no. 4. No. 3 takes the two steps, no. 6 moves in towards the basket.
  10. 10No. 3 lays it up. The lines step up and no. 5 joins the shooting line.
  11. 11No. 6 rebounds and no. 4 dribbles in. Every player switches lines after their turn.
  12. 12No. 6 passes out to no. 5 and no. 4 goes up for the lay-up. After a few rounds switch sides and use the left hand.

Coaching points

  • Right side: right–left steps, jump off the left foot and drive the right knee up. Left side the opposite.
  • Aim for the top corner of the small square on the backboard.
  • Hold the ball in two hands during the steps so nobody can knock it away.
  • The rebounder catches the ball before it bounces and passes straight away – keep the tempo high.
  • Count together how many lay-ups in a row go in.

Variations

Easier

Walk instead of run, or start with one dribble and the steps from just outside the lane.

Harder

Go from the left side with the left hand, add a passive defender, or make 10 in a row against the clock.
