Blue attacks to the right, red to the left. Blue starts with the ball.
How to run it
A small-sided game on a small pitch without goalkeepers. Everyone gets lots of touches, finishes and duels, and game understanding grows by itself.
Set-up
A pitch of about 28 × 20 m with two small goals (about 3 × 1.5 m) at the ends. Two teams of three. Spare balls at the side for quick restarts.
Instructions
- 1Blue attacks to the right, red to the left. Blue starts with the ball.
- 2Pass out to the side. Red presses the ball carrier.
- 3The ball carrier dribbles away from the pressure and looks up for a free team-mate.
- 4Switch of play to the free player on the other side.
- 5The free player dribbles towards goal past their defender.
- 6Shot through the small goal – goal!
- 7Red restarts at once with a new ball from the side.
- 8Red dribbles into the pitch and looks for a pass.
- 9Pass to a free team-mate in front of goal.
- 10Shot through the small goal. Play on straight away – no breaks.
Coaching points
- Wide and deep: when your team has the ball – spread out.
- Defending: close down the nearest player and force the ball carrier towards the side.
- Let the children play – stop rarely and praise good decisions.
- Play short games (3–4 min) and change opponents.
Variations
Easier
4v4 on a bigger area, or a joker who always plays with the team in possession.
Harder
Two touches maximum, or a goal only counts if the whole team is in the opponents' half.
Equipment
- 4 × Markers
- 2 × Goal
