Passing Through Gates

Football12 min6 players9 steps
PassingTechniqueEasy

Three pairs at a gate each, one on each side. The player with the ball is ready to pass.

How to run it

Pairs pass through small gates of cones and then move on to a new gate. The drill trains passing accuracy, first touch and looking up before you play.

Set-up

An area of about 28 × 24 m with four gates (two cones, 1.5 m apart). Players in pairs with one ball per pair, 4 m from each side of a gate.

Instructions

  1. 1Three pairs at a gate each, one on each side. The player with the ball is ready to pass.
  2. 2Pass through the gate with the inside of the foot. Your partner receives with one touch.
  3. 3Pass back through the gate. The receiver cushions the ball and turns.
  4. 4The ball carrier dribbles to a free gate. The partner runs to the other side of the same gate.
  5. 5Pass through the new gate – check it is free before you play.
  6. 6Return through the gate. The coach counts how many gates the pair manages in a minute.
  7. 7Move again to the next free gate: the ball carrier dribbles, the partner runs round.
  8. 8Pass through the gate, first time now if the first touch was good.
  9. 9Return. Swap roles in the pair so both get to dribble between the gates.

Coaching points

  • Standing foot points where you pass, toes of the kicking foot up – pass with the inside.
  • Receive with the foot furthest from your partner so you can turn straight away.
  • Look up before you dribble to the next gate so two pairs don't pick the same one.
  • Keep score: one point for every successful pass through a gate.

Variations

Easier

Wider gates (3 m) and shorter distances. Let the pair stay at the same gate for several passes.

Harder

Narrower gates, pass with the weaker foot or first time. Add a defender who closes gates.

Equipment

  • 4 × Markers
  • 8 × Cone
