Passing Triangle – Pass and Follow

Football12 min4 players7 steps
PassingEasy

A player at each cone, two at the start cone. The first one has the ball.

How to run it

A classic passing drill where you follow your pass. Players practise passing and receiving on the move and get used to moving after they have played the ball.

Set-up

Three cones in a triangle about 12 m apart. Four players and one ball: two at the first cone, one at each of the others.

Instructions

  1. 1A player at each cone, two at the start cone. The first one has the ball.
  2. 2Pass to the next cone and run after your pass – join the queue behind the player you passed to.
  3. 3The receiver takes the ball in the right direction and passes on to the next cone, then follows.
  4. 4The ball goes round the triangle. The player at the front of the queue receives the next pass.
  5. 5Keep passing and following – keep an even tempo in the passes.
  6. 6Now the first touch should already be aimed at the next cone so the pass goes quicker.
  7. 7After two rounds, change direction so both feet are trained.

Coaching points

  • Open your body towards the next cone before the ball arrives – "receive away from the cone".
  • Pass to the receiver's far foot so they get the ball in their direction of play.
  • Run straight after the pass – don't watch the ball.
  • Talk: call the name of the player you pass to.

Variations

Easier

Shorter distances (8 m) and two touches before the pass.

Harder

First-time passes only, or add a fourth cone and a second ball.

Equipment

  • 3 × Cone
