Blue have the ball with their goalkeeper. Red are in their starting positions.
How to run it
One team plays out from the goalkeeper, the other presses on a trigger. If the pressing team wins the ball it must finish fast. Trains pressing triggers, pressing together and transition.
Set-up
A pitch of about 32 × 22 m with two full-size goals and goalkeepers. Two teams of four outfield players. Every attack starts with the blue team's goalkeeper.
Instructions
- 1Blue have the ball with their goalkeeper. Red are in their starting positions.
- 2The goalkeeper plays out. Red wait and hold their shape.
- 3The pass out to the side is the trigger: the nearest player presses in a curve and blocks the way back.
- 4Blue are forced to play forward under pressure – the pass is read and intercepted.
- 5Red play forward at once to the first free runner.
- 6Finish before blue can get organised.
- 7Restart with the blue goalkeeper.
- 8This time blue play past the first presser.
- 9Pass into the middle before red can shift over.
- 10On to the striker, who turns.
- 11The striker takes the ball towards goal.
- 12Finish – this time blue were rewarded for playing through the press.
Coaching points
- Pressing triggers: a pass to the side, a poor first touch or a pass backwards.
- Press in a curve so you also block the pass back.
- Press together – the second player takes the nearest passing option.
- After winning the ball: play forward within three seconds.
Variations
Easier
The pressing team presses with just two players, or blue get a joker.
Harder
The pressing team must win the ball within 8 seconds. Points for winning the ball in the opponents' half.
