Three players in line with a puck each behind the cones. Goalie in net.
How to run it
Players stickhandle through the cones, skate out to a shooting spot and shoot on the goalie. Trains puck control at speed, going from stickhandling to shooting, and gives the goalie lots of shots from both sides.
Set-up
Five cones in a row from the red line towards the net, about 2.3 m apart. A line behind the first cone. Goalie in net. Every player has a puck; spare pucks in a pile by the line.
Instructions
- 1Three players in line with a puck each behind the cones. Goalie in net.
- 2The first player stickhandles through the cones; the others move up in the line.
- 3Out to the left shooting spot. The goalie sets up on the puck.
- 4Shot on goal!
- 5The next player goes through the slalom. The shooter curls out to the boards.
- 6The second player goes to the right shooting spot. The first shooter skates back and picks up a new puck.
- 7Shot from the right. The first player joins the line with the new puck.
- 8The third player goes through the slalom; the first is at the front of the line again.
- 9Out to the left, the goalie follows the puck. The second shooter skates back along the boards.
- 10Shot – and the line keeps rolling.
Coaching points
- Keep the puck close in the slalom: short moves and soft hands.
- Look up at the net before you reach the shooting spot.
- Shoot in stride – don't stop before the shot.
- Aim low at the far post; a rebound there often ends up in the net.
Variations
Easier
Wider spacing between the cones and a shot from a stationary puck.
Harder
Backhand round every other cone, or a defender who leaves the net when the player passes the last cone.
Equipment
