Blue attacks in red's zone. Red defend.
How to run it
A game with the theme of transition. When the ball is won the team must counter within five seconds, when it is lost everyone backchecks at once. The goalie starts the counter with a quick throw-out.
Set-up
Full rink, five against five with goalies. The coach counts aloud to five at every turnover.
Instructions
- 1Blue attacks in red's zone. Red defend.
- 2A pass out to the left wing. Red shift to the ball side.
- 3The pass into the slot is cut out – turnover!
- 4Red play straight to a wing who breaks. The blue backs retreat.
- 5Red counter in three lanes at full speed. The blue forwards backcheck.
- 6A pass out wide.
- 7A pass into the slot.

Coaching points
- Ball won = run! The first three seconds matter most.
- Ball lost = everyone backchecks towards the middle, the nearest pressures the ball.
- Goalie: look up at once – a quick throw beats a perfect one.
- Double points for a goal on a counter within five seconds.
Variations
Easier
4v4, or the team gets eight seconds.
Harder
