Six players stand in the square with a ball each. Four cones are spread out inside the square as obstacles.
How to run it
Everyone dribbles in a square while the coach calls commands: forehand, backhand, round a cone, stop, swap balls and full speed. Lots of ball contact plus listening and looking up.
Set-up
A square of about 12 × 12 m with discs in the corners and four cones inside. Every player has a ball. The coach stands at the side and calls the commands.
Instructions
- 1Six players stand in the square with a ball each. Four cones are spread out inside the square as obstacles.
- 2Free dribbling in the square. Look up and find free space.
- 3"Forehand!" – move the ball on the forehand side of the blade only.
- 4"Backhand!" – now only on the backhand side. Shorter steps and less speed if needed.
- 5"Round a cone!" – go to the nearest cone and round it tightly with the ball.
- 6"Stop!" – stop the ball and stand still with the ball under control at the blade.
- 7"Swap!" – leave your ball and go to a team-mate's ball.
- 8Keep dribbling with the new ball.
- 9"Full speed!" – go as fast as you can but keep control. The coach calls the next command.
Coaching points
- Both hands on the stick, knees slightly bent and the ball in front of the body.
- Roll the wrists to move the ball between forehand and backhand.
- Look up between touches – you should see team-mates and cones, not just the ball.
- Stop the ball with the blade on top of or beside it, not by hitting it.
Variations
Easier
Fewer commands (just forehand, stop and round a cone) and a bigger square.
Harder
More commands, for example "turn!", "lift the ball on the blade" or "drag round the cone". A smaller square.
