3v3 with a Pivot – Read and Choose

Handball18 min8 players11 steps
Game understandingAttackingSmall-sided gamesAdvanced

The centre back has the ball, the pivot between the defenders.

How to run it

Left back, centre back and pivot against three defenders. The pivot sets a screen and the centre goes past it. If the neighbour helps, the back is free; if the defenders switch, the pivot rolls towards goal. Trains the screen and roll, decisions and teamwork.

Set-up

Left half of half court. Left back, centre back and pivot, plus a feeder with an extra ball. Three defenders at the 6 m line. Goalkeeper in goal.

Instructions

  1. 1The centre back has the ball, the pivot between the defenders.
  2. 2The pivot sets a screen on the middle defender's left side.
  3. 3The centre goes past the screen. The left defender has to help.
  4. 4So the left back is free – a pass.
  5. 5Jump shot from nine metres.
  6. 6The feeder gives a new ball to the centre. Everyone resets.
  7. 7A new screen in the same place.
  8. 8Now the left defender stays with the back and the middle defender switches onto the centre – the pivot rolls towards goal.
  9. 9A pass to the rolling pivot.
  10. 10Shot from the line.
  11. 11Rotation: pivot → centre, centre → back, back → pivot.

Coaching points

  • The screen stands still and wide – if it moves it is a free throw against.
  • The centre goes as close to the screen as possible so the defender can't get through.
  • Read the defence: who leaves their player? That player is free.
  • The roll: turn to the ball and show the hands at once.

Variations

Easier

The defenders do what the coach decided in advance, so the attackers know the answer.

Harder

The defenders choose freely and the attackers may also shoot from nine metres themselves.
