Crossing Between the Backs

Handball18 min7 players12 steps
AttackingPositional playAdvanced

Three backs against three defenders. The centre back has the ball.

How to run it

The centre back attacks diagonally to one side and the left back crosses behind and gets the ball in the gap. Trains the timing of the cross, running angles and pulling defenders along.

Set-up

Three backs (left, centre, right) against three defenders in front of the goal area. The centre back has the ball, the right back holds a spare one. Goalkeeper in goal.

Instructions

  1. 1Three backs against three defenders. The centre back has the ball.
  2. 2The centre back attacks diagonally to the left. The middle defender steps out, the left back starts the run.
  3. 3The cross: the left back runs behind the centre back, who drags two defenders along.
  4. 4Short pass to the left back, arriving at speed towards the gap in the middle.
  5. 5Three steps into the gap between the middle defender and the right defender.
  6. 6Jump shot through the gap.
  7. 7Everyone back to the start. The right back gives the next ball to the centre.
  8. 8Now to the right: the centre attacks diagonally towards the right half, the right back starts.
  9. 9The right back crosses behind the centre back.
  10. 10Pass to the right back in the gap.
  11. 11Three steps in between the middle defender and the left defender.
  12. 12Jump shot.

Coaching points

  • The ball carrier must really threaten the goal – otherwise the defenders won't follow.
  • The crossing player starts late and arrives at full speed behind the ball carrier's back.
  • The pass is short and soft, almost a hand-off.
  • After the cross the new ball carrier goes straight at goal, not further sideways.
  • If the defence switches correctly: the ball carrier keeps the ball and plays on to the next player.

Variations

Easier

Passive defenders who just follow. Walk through the running lines first.

Harder

Active defenders who may switch, and play on after the cross with wings and a pivot (6v6).
