Fast Break in Waves

Handball18 min9 players9 steps
SpeedAttackingGame understandingAdvanced

The blue goalkeeper has just saved. Blue in defensive positions, two red attackers near the blue goal.

How to run it

After a save the fast break starts: the wings run as the first wave, the backs follow as the second. When the first wave is stopped the ball goes to the second wave, which uses the overload. Trains speed, decisions and the structure of the fast break.

Set-up

Full court. A blue team with goalkeeper and five court players in their own defence (wings and backs). Two red players who have just finished their attack. Red goalkeeper in the other goal.

Instructions

  1. 1The blue goalkeeper has just saved. Blue in defensive positions, two red attackers near the blue goal.
  2. 2The wings sprint at once, the backs follow. The reds turn and run back.
  3. 3First wave: a long throw from the goalkeeper to the right wing at full speed.
  4. 4A red defender gets back and closes the wing. The wing bounces and looks up.
  5. 5Second wave: the wing plays inside to the centre back arriving at speed.
  6. 6The centre back attacks the middle. The second red defender has to step out.
  7. 7Pass to the left back who is free.
  8. 8The left back takes three steps at full speed.
  9. 9Jump shot – a goal before the defence is organised.

Coaching points

  • Start the moment the goalkeeper has the ball – not when the throw goes.
  • The wings run wide along the side lines so there is space to play into.
  • The goalkeeper throws in front of the wing, where they are going.
  • The second wave arrives at speed through the middle and calls for the ball.
  • Decide quickly: if the first wave is closed, play straight on to the second wave.

Variations

Easier

No red defenders in the first rounds – just running lines and throws. Then add one defender.

Harder

Three reds running back, and a third wave (the pivot) who carries the attack on if the second wave is stopped too.
