Pass and Follow Square

Handball12 min6 players10 steps
PassingWarm-upEasy

One player at each cone, a queue at the first and third cone. The player with the ball passes to the right.

How to run it

A classic passing drill: pass to the next cone and follow your pass. Trains passing and catching with both hands and moving straight after you pass.

Set-up

Four cones in a square of about 8 × 8 m. One player at each cone and an extra player queuing at two of the cones. One ball.

Instructions

  1. 1One player at each cone, a queue at the first and third cone. The player with the ball passes to the right.
  2. 2Pass to the next cone. The passer runs round the outside and joins the queue there – the first player in the passer's queue steps up.
  3. 3The receiver catches with both hands, turns and passes on. Follow your pass!
  4. 4The ball goes round the square. Whoever has passed always runs outside the cones.
  5. 5First lap done. Now the passes should be quicker – catch and throw in one movement.
  6. 6Keep going: catch in front of the chest, turn the upper body and throw with the elbow high.
  7. 7The receiver steps towards the ball as it comes, making the pass shorter and safer.
  8. 8Second lap: new players are now at every cone.
  9. 9Keep passing and following. Count out loud how many passes you make without a drop.
  10. 10Change direction after a few laps so that you pass and catch the other way too.

Coaching points

  • Throw with the elbow at shoulder height and finish with the wrist towards the receiver's chest.
  • Catch with the fingers spread and the thumbs close together – a "triangle" behind the ball.
  • Step towards the ball as you catch. Players who stand still lose the ball more easily in a game.
  • Get out of the passing line straight after the pass.
  • Players in the queue watch the ball and are ready to step up.

Variations

Easier

Make the square smaller (6 × 6 m) and allow bounce passes. Walk instead of running after the pass.

Harder

Two balls at once, starting at opposite cones. Or: catch the pass in the air, or use the weaker hand.

Equipment

  • 4 × Cone
