Running Passes in Threes

Handball15 min7 players10 steps
PassingSpeedEasy

Three players side by side, the middle one with the ball. The next three wait behind.

How to run it

Three players run the length of the court in three lanes and pass at speed, middle–wing–middle, and the middle player finishes from 9 m. Trains passing and catching at full speed and the step rule.

Set-up

Full court. Three players start side by side near their own 9 m line (left, middle, right), the next three wait behind. The middle player has the ball. Goalkeeper in the far goal.

Instructions

  1. 1Three players side by side, the middle one with the ball. The next three wait behind.
  2. 2Everyone runs. The middle passes out to the left.
  3. 3The left player passes back inside – the ball should arrive in front of the receiver.
  4. 4The middle passes out to the right.
  5. 5The right player passes back to the middle.
  6. 6The middle passes out to the left again as you approach 9 m.
  7. 7The left player plays the ball inside just before 9 m. The goalkeeper gets ready.
  8. 8The middle player takes three steps and finishes with a jump shot. The wings carry on towards the corners.
  9. 9The next three start. The first three jog back along the side lines.
  10. 10The second group passes at speed the same way. Swap lanes in the group every time.

Coaching points

  • Pass in front of the receiver, where they are going – not where they are now.
  • Catch and throw within three steps, without bouncing. It gives the passes a rhythm.
  • Keep the lanes – too close together and the passes get too short.
  • Call for the ball and show with your hands where you want it.
  • Full speed all the way to the finish.

Variations

Easier

Two side by side instead of three, and allow one bounce between passes.

Harder

Add a defender who runs along and tries to intercept. Or: the ball must not touch the floor and the goal must come within 8 seconds.
