The Wing Runs In

Handball18 min8 players11 steps
AttackingPositional playGame understandingIntermediate

The left wing has the ball, three defenders on the line.

How to run it

The wing passes to the back and runs in along the 6 m line as a second pivot. The back finds the wing in the gap, or shoots when the defence drops to cover the run. Trains the run-in, timing and reading the defence.

Set-up

Left side of half court. Left wing with a ball and a queue behind, left back and centre back. Three defenders at the 6 m line. Goalkeeper in goal.

Instructions

  1. 1The left wing has the ball, three defenders on the line.
  2. 2A pass to the left back and the wing starts the run-in.
  3. 3The wing follows the 6 m line in between the defenders. The left back goes at the defender.
  4. 4The defender steps out to the back – the ball goes in to the wing in the gap.
  5. 5Shot from six metres.
  6. 6The next wing steps up with the ball, the first goes to the back of the queue.
  7. 7A pass to the back and a new run-in.
  8. 8This time the defender drops back to cover the running wing.
  9. 9So the back is free and takes the steps.
  10. 10Jump shot from nine metres.
  11. 11The back and the centre swap; the wing jogs out to the queue.

Coaching points

  • The wing starts the run-in once the pass has left the hand.
  • Run close to the 6 m line without stepping into the goal area.
  • The back attacks the gap and sees both options: pass in or own shot.
  • Switch to the right side after a few repetitions.

Variations

Easier

The defenders stand still and the back always passes in to the wing.

Harder

The defenders choose whether to step out or drop, and the back has to read it.
