Wing queues on both sides, a back on each side. The goalkeeper is in goal.
How to run it
The wing gives the ball to the back, runs round the cone, catches at speed, jumps into the goal area and widens the angle. Trains the wing's running line, catching on the move and shooting from a tight angle.
Set-up
Wing players queue at the side line on both sides, each with a ball. A right back and a left back at the 9 m line feed the passes. A disc on each wing as a running mark. Goalkeeper in goal.
Instructions
- 1Wing queues on both sides, a back on each side. The goalkeeper is in goal.
- 2The right wing passes to the right back and starts the run towards the disc.
- 3The wing rounds the disc and takes the return pass at speed on the wing.
- 4Take-off at the goal area line, jump in towards the middle to widen the angle and shoot.
- 5The left wing passes to the left back and starts. The next right wing steps up.
- 6Round the disc and catch on the wing.
- 7Jump into the goal area and shoot – watch the goalkeeper while in the air.
- 8Second round: the next right wing passes and starts. Shooters go to the back of the queue.
- 9Catch at speed, ball up straight away.
- 10Wing shot, this time at the near corner.
Coaching points
- The running line is a curve: out towards the side line, then in towards goal, which improves the angle.
- Catch the ball at speed – don't stop before take-off.
- Jump in towards the middle, not straight at the goal. Every metre inside improves the angle.
- Wait until the top of the jump and see what the goalkeeper does.
- The backs pass in front of the wing, not straight at them.
Variations
Easier
No jump – shoot with a step from the wing. Or catch standing at the disc.
Harder
A passive defender on the wing to run round, or vary the shots: far corner, near corner, lob.
